Professor Larry Mayer

“From Deepwater Horizon to the Arctic Ocean:

Exploring the Secrets of the Deep”

Professor Larry Mayer is presently the Director of the School of Maritime Science and Ocean Engineering and the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire.  He graduated magna cum laude with an honors degree in Geology and received a P.H.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

At Scripps he worked with the Marine Physical Laboratory’s Deep -Tow Geophysical package applying this sophisticated acoustic sensor to problems of deep-sea mapping and the history of climate.

After being selected as an astronaut candidate finalist for NASA’s first class of mission specialists, Larry went on to a Post-Doc at the university of Rhode Island school of Oceanography.  In 2000 Larry became the founding director of the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire.

Larry has participated in more than 90 cruises (over 70 months at sea) during the last 35 years, including eight mapping expeditions in ice-covered regions of the high Arctic.

Larry was a member of the Presidents Panel on Ocean Exploration and National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Geosciences.  He received the Kean Medal for Marine Geology and recently completed National Academies report on the impact of the Deepwater Horizon Spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  He is the author of a large number of publications on marine geology and geophysics.  He is also a member of the State Department’s Extended Continental Shelf Task Force and the Navy’s SCICEX Advisory Committee.

In 2016, Larry was appointed by President Obama to the Arctic Research Commission.  His current research deals with sonar imaging and 3D visualization to ocean mapping problems and Law of the Sea issues.

  1.  Please send your check for guest fees ($10 per guest) to the Women’s International Forum One UN Plaza, DC 1-0648, United Nations, New York, NY 10017 by MONDAY MAY 29th, 2017 to be able to include them in the security list!
  2.  Ground Passes should be picked up from WIF Board members the day of the program on 46 Street,   Visitor´s Entrance to the UN, from 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  3.    Photo identification will be required to receive a Ground Pass and will be needed to enter the Security Check.
