Erica Kochi and Christopher Fabian lead the UNICEF Innovation Unit, which they founded in 2007. This unit has developed a number of innovations, including open-source tools to improve the health and well-being of children and communities with low infrastructure. For example, Rapid SMS was used to help register 7 million births in Nigeria, and u-Report gave 190,000 Ugandans a way to directly comment on national policy. Work in innovation has also helped UNICEF and its partners deliver prenatal care to thousands of pregnant women across Rwanda and improve the diagnosis and treatment of children with HIV in Zambia. The Digital Drum, a locally constructed solar-powered computer kiosk providing information on health and education, was chosen as one of Time Magazine’s best 50 inventions of 2011.  In 2013, Time Magazine selected Erica Kochi and Christopher Fabian to be on the “Time 100” list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
